Music Genres of Trolls World Tour

Exploring Music Genres within “Trolls World Tour”

April 26, 2020

Hey guys!

I don’t know about you, but I totally geeked out over “Trolls: World Tour”! Little did the producers know that this movie would be a music teacher’s dream! As I watched, I couldn’t help but imagine how my students could relate with and explore a variety of Music Genres and how I could help them dive a little deeper into that learning process! This idea led me to creating an interactive lesson on Music Genres!

Exploring Music Genres

Since distance learning has become the new normal, I set off to create an interactive presentation that kiddos could engage in and explore learning about the genres presented in the movie while at home! If you have not watched the movie, there are six strings introduced, with each Troll Tribe having one. Each string is a different color and represents the identity (genre) of that particular Troll Tribe. While the movie does introduce a total of twelve genres, I felt it might be overwhelming for students to learn about all twelve right away. My focus became creating an engaging way to introduce the main six genres in the movie!

Background Knowledge

First, the students will learn about the concept of a music genre and watch a clip from the movie to see how many genres of music they can name on their own. For my Marzano friends, we are really “building background knowledge for academic achievement”, if you know what I mean 😉

Click on a String to Learn

Next, students will encounter the Main page where all the strings and main characters are present. Clicking on one of the strings will take your students to a closer look at the characteristics of that genre of music!

What will they learn?

  • Definition for each genre
  • Time frame for when the genre began
  • A focus or main instrument associated with the genre
  • A video/listening example to experience and connect with that genre!

How to Grab this Freebie

I would love to send this presentation your way! For free! Lately, I have been feeling pulled to create more and more current and relevant music resources. I really strive for a balanced curriculum of the “old” and the “new”, when it comes to content and repertoire choices. I notice that resources including new music or pop culture references are few and far between, often with the main challenge of making sure one is always respecting copyright protections. I am a firm believer that artists and creators of new music deserve to be credited and protected for their work. It just means that it falls on us to get creative in making resources for our students!

Creating lessons from scratch – let’s be honest – takes a lot of work, effort and time. Nevertheless, building these kinds of lessons is truly my PASSION so it is worth the effort for me! As an educator, it is so fulfilling to watch your students shine when they can connect to a lesson that is so relevant and current to them. These moments and musical experiences provide the motivation for me to continue creating resources that utilize new and modern music and share them here!

I would love for you to join me on this journey and for you to be a part of the Music and Motivate community! I will be sending Modern Music Freebies, just like this one, each month straight to your inbox.

My kids have been asking to learn more about different music genres and this is PERFECT! I used the Google Slides file to turn it into a Nearpod. Thank you so much!!!

      No problem!

I am a curriculum designer who empowers music teachers who feel like something is missing, to go beyond the standard folk song and classical music centered classroom, to incorporate more modern and relevant lessons to fully engage all students! I believe general music curriculum needs to be modernized to truly connect with students living in a very modern world! Thanks for stopping by! Read More
